Trekking the Sierra Nevada: Mulhacen and Veleta

Join us in the summer of 2015 on this unforgettable walking experience in the Sierra Nevada, southern Spain. We have an experience of more than 10 years with this hiking tour and only offer it in the middle of the summer, when most of the snow has disappeared and the chances of bad weather are minimal. Due to the altitude the temperatures and walking conditions here are generally excellent in this time of the year.

You are led by a qualified English speaking guide as you cross this tremendous mountain range and climbing the 2 highest mountains of the Sierra Nevada. This hiking tour is suitable for everyone with a good health and sufficient walking experience. It is mountainwalking and not mountainclimbing.

As a starter we will walk on the 3rd day to the top of the Maroma (with an altitude 2067 metres/6782 feet the highest mountain of the province of Málaga). We don’t start from sea-level and we will make use of our Landrovers to the starting/ending point. The ascent/descent of this walk is 470 metres/1542 feet.

On the 4th day we will climb the Mulhacén, the highest mountain in mainland Spain (3482 metres/11424 feet). The ascent of this walk is 800 metres/2625 feet, the descent is 1000 metres/3281 feet.

On the 5th day we will climb the Veleta, the second highest mountain in mainland Spain (3392 metres/11129 feet). The ascent of this walk is 900 metres/2953 feet, the descent is 1200 metres/3937 feet.

The last 2 days of this holiday are reserved for culture, you will stay 2 nights in Granada and may visit the world famous Alhambra.
This guided holiday week costs € 548,- (Euros) p.p. half board.

2017 DATES: We are running this walk twice during 2017. The holiday starts on each of the following dates; 11 July & 22 August. (max. number of participants per tour: 12).

Mulhacen, Veleta and the Alhambra

You will stay the first 3 nights in Cómpeta for acclimatisation, from where we will do walks to an altitude of more than 2000 metres under the guidance of an experienced mountain guide. On day 4 we will drive to Capileira. A microbus will bring us from Capileira to an altitude of 2700 metres from where we will climb to the top of the Mulhacén (3483 m) together with our guide. We will stay one night in the mountain hut Refugio Poqueira (2500 m) and the next day, after climbing to the top of the Veleta (3394 m), we will walk with our guide to the ski village Pradollano (2100 m) on the other side of the mountain range. There we will stay in a luxury apartment. The last 2 nights we will stay in the centre of Granada. Upon arrival in Granada we will do a walk with our guide in the nature reserve above Granada along the irrigation system of the Alhambra and the next day you may visit the Alhambra itself.

Sierra Nevada Snow

We offer trekking the Sierra Nevada only in the months of July and August. Then the mountains are largely snowfree, the chance of bad weather in those months is minimal and even though it is very hot in the rest of Spain, here it is generally pleasant walking weather because of the high altitudes. Both the Mulhacen as the Veleta can be reached without tools, so it is mountainwalking and not mountainclimbing.
